The KPI team has been busy, busy!
Between grant applications, fine-tuning our programming, preparing to build our field, moving forward with Local NGO status, getting ready for both Celebrate Sochi and our upcoming Cocktails for Kids Play, trying to get all of our awesome kids sponsored, designing & booking our Travel with a Purpose trips, arranging our own KPI Commemoration Activities in April and more…the KPI team barely has the time to come up for air!!
All that being said, the work is paying off and we’re excited to give you a couple updates!!
Field of Opportunity
Breaking ground on our Field of Opportunity is in sight!! We have had multiple engineers visit the field over the past two months with are ready to start sorcing local labor to level the field as well as machinery. We intend to hire men and women from our Gatagara community to assist with the leveling as well as plug the grass…yes, plug the grass, by hand!!! Literally, the community members uproot the grass and then replant it. Imagine.
LNGO Status
KPI is currently seeking its Local NGO status as Kids Play Rwanda. We are excited to being this process as it will also be the first step in transitioning the management of the organization to local community members. KPI has developed solid relationships with both Rwandans and local Americans and we are excited for this next phase of our organization.

Celebrate Sochi
Celebrate Sochi was a success! During the event, we raised $2,500 for KPI as well as had the opportunity to share our KPI mission with our community members in Park City. We are grateful for all of the support we received and so proud of our Athlete Ambassador Erin Hamlin for becoming the first female American luger to medal at any Winter Olympics, as well as the first American of either gender to medal in singles competition (Bronze).

Walk to Remember
KPI is in the process of planning our own community commemoration project this year. Our participants and partner schools will be hosting Walk to Remember to remember the one million plus lives lost in 1994. We will invite community members to join us as we walk from our field to our community Genocide Memorial and place flowers on our mass community grave. Students will read poems on unity, we will have a guest youth speaker from Kigali, and invite local officials.
